Calder Hannan is assistant professor of music in music theory at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.
He completed his Ph.D. in Music Theory at Columbia University in 2024 and worked at Columbia and Fordham universities before beginning at IU.
Hannan’s research focuses on popular music—in particular, emic approaches to rhythm and meter in metal music. He plays in the New York City-based metal bands Florid Ekstasis and Aphelion Entity and shares his research for a popular audience on his YouTube channel, Metal Music Theory.
